WORK EXPERIENCE

Xavier has worked in the Mining and Ship Building industries as mechanical engineer in Western Australia (WA). First training in reliability engineering at Telfer gold mine in 2006/2007, he specialised in vibration analysis and precision maintenance in 2008, working across different mine sites in WA. The same year Xavier entered the engineering design team at Austal Ships, world leader in the design and construction of high speed aluminium ferries. There he was also engaged in reviews and upgrades of manufacturing processes, as well as technical support for vessels in service. As part of his Master’s degree in 2010, he worked with Kockums AB, a Swedish ship builder, on a project of “strategic management for sustainability”. In 2011, he conducted research on the sustainable development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), focused on the United Nations’ Barbados Programme of Action and Mauritius Strategy. Xavier joined the ELIA team in September 2011 as strategist, researcher and facilitator.

LIFE EXPERIENCE

Xavier was born in Mauritius and has since lived in Australia (2004 – 2010) and Sweden (2010 – 2011). He moved back to Mauritius together with his partner Maja Zidov in 2011. In 2004, Xavier travelled to Australia to undertake a degree in Engineering. After this, his work sent him to the heat of the Australian outback, as a “machinery doctor” in underground and open cut mines. He sought to expand his skill set by moving to the ship building industry, and thereby had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of people. As a lover of nature and growing aware of the international crises, Xavier decided to undertake a Master’s degree in sustainability. This endeavour took him to Europe, where he met Maja, classmates from 30 different countries and he experienced his first white winter. He concluded this adventure by another: riding a bicycle from Sweden to Serbia, Maja’s homeland, with his friend Nanond from Thailand. He is now back in Mauritius, enjoying family, friends, wind and waves, and is driven to contribute to moving society towards sustainability.
